Pick a Reputable Web Designer
It's a misperception that home-based freelancers are cheaper than their professional counterparts. Freelancers are often insulated from the industry, don't know what they should be charging and can inflate prices hugely without even knowing it.

  • Use a reputable office-based web design company with a daytime landline telephone number.
  • Check reviews and customer comments. Ensure they have done work for several companies.
  • Browse portfolios and check how the real websites look online.
  • Make contact - how helpful and responsive are they?

Many "web designers" go "missing" from time to time. You can't contact them for weeks or months at a stretch. They don't answer their phones, return messages or reply to emails. They're either on holiday, in bed or just plain procrastinating. Unfortunately, in the meantime how are you supposed to update your website?

Often the "web designer" will have your domain name (web address) registered in their name, making it hard or impossible to get control of. Often the web hosting space password will be known only to your website designer.
